Hugo Grrrl is a drag king, an event producer, and a mostly-male stripper. This adorable little gentleman arrived on this earth a mere two years ago in a hailstorm of duct tape and glitter, and has since made a big splash in the kiwi cabaret community.
His potent stylistic blend of burlesque, drag and uncomfortably awkward gyration won him the national drag pageant title of King of Kings NZ ‘17, Best Newcomer at the New Zealand Burlesque Festival ‘15 and this year had him chosen as one of the top twelve performers in the world to participate in the first ever international drag king talent search (King Me: Rise of a Drag King). He’s taken his clothes off at all three major NZ pride festivals, and recently performed alongside international headliners at The Big Burlesque Blowout festival in Christchurch.
As an event manager, he’s created over a dozen original show concepts, including The Wellington Pun Battle, Tragic Mike: A Hilarious All-Male Strip Revue and Viva La Vulva: A Riot Grrrl Strip Show, as well as a bunch of other sell-out queer gigs. Perhaps most notably, he produces Naked Girls Reading in New Zealand – a Chicago-borne, controversial and literary show which is exactly what it sounds like.
He is so pleased to be here humping for you tonight. He’s a lad who’s always happy to see you, he aims to sexually confuse, he’s Hugo Grrrl!
